Afterplay launches legal indie retro games store, buy and play instantly

Afterplay, the cloud emulation platform "RetroArch with the Analogue interface", has just launched an integrated store. There you can buy new homebrew games for classic hardware from Incube8 Studios and Mega Cat Studios, and play them immediately in your emulator.

The retro homebrew scene was missing something: a clean, legal place to purchase new creations directly from independent developers, without going through half a dozen different sites. Afterplay has just filled this gap with the launch of its integrated store.

🛒 What is Afterplay again?

Afterplay is an emulation platform accessible from the browser or a desktop application. The concept: RetroArch reimagined with the polished Analogue OSinterface. The platform allows you to store your ROM library in the cloud, synchronize your saves between all your devices, benefit from several save slots and even online multiplayer. A premium version adds notably an automatic translation of Japanese games into English.

🎮 The store: buy legal homebrew instantly

The new thing is the integrated store. You can now purchase new homebrew games directly from the app or browser. Once the purchase is made, the game is immediately added to your Afterplay library and you can play it on the correct emulator without any additional handling.

The first studios present:

  • Incube8 Games, publisher specializing in physical and digital games for Game Boy, GBA, NES and other classic systems
  • Mega Cat Studios, American homebrew studio known for its pro-quality NES, Game Boy, and Genesis games

A playable demo of the game Infinity is available for free now. Physical copies are also offered for some titles, for collectors who want something to put on their shelf.

💡 Why it’s important

The marketplace Afterplay is the first serious attempt to create a Steam for retro homebrew gamings, a legal one-stop shop where devs publish and players purchase and play friction-free. The closest parallel so far was the EmuDeck Store launched in early April, but Afterplay goes further by directly integrating the sale into its multi-system emulation ecosystem. >For homebrew developers, this is a new way to monetize their work without having to run their own store or go only with physical cartridges. For players, it’s maximum simplicity: buy, play, right away.

Afterplay announces that other studios will join the store soon. Visit afterplay.io to explore what is available.
