Ample v0.287: playing Apple II on Mac has never been easier
TheApple II is one of the most important machines in video gaming history. It’s on him that franchises like Ultima, Wizardry, Karateka or even Oregon Trail began on him. And to emulate it on Mac, the reference solution remains MAME, but MAME on the command line, it's not joy.
🍎 Ample, what is it?
Ample is a macOS frontend for using MAME specifically as an Apple II emulator. It makes the native and visualexperience: you launch the app, you choose your diskette, you play. No more need to remember MAME commands or fiddling with config files.
The version 0.287 tracks the evolution of MAME (0.287 corresponds to the internal numbering of the project) and makes the associated corrections and updates. Ample requires Mac OS X 10.11 or later.
💡 Why the Apple II is worth talking about in 2026
The Apple II library has thousands of games, many of which have never been released on other platforms. The Internet Archive also offers thousands of Apple II floppies in its Software Library collection, entirely playable via emulation. For those curious about video game history, it's a gold mine.
