Black Tiger, Capcom's arcade classic, gets reborn as a native Sega Mega Drive port
Released in arcades back in 1987, Black Tiger followed a warrior fighting dragons and fantastical creatures across eight action-platforming stages. Nearly forty years later, homebrew developer rester159 has completed a fully native port of the game for the Sega Mega Drive / Genesis, built with SGDK, an open-source development kit that lets coders write C for the 16-bit console.
The project, available since September 21, 2026, faithfully reconstructs all eight original stages and was tested step by step against the arcade version's behavior to match its feel. Unlike a simple emulated port, the game runs directly on real Mega Drive hardware (or on any emulator for the system), without relying on the original arcade code.
Playable right now, with open source code
The full game can be downloaded for free from the project's itch.io page, while the source code and build instructions are available on the official GitHub repository, which also doubles as a getting-started guide for anyone who wants to run it on a real flash cartridge or on an emulator like BlastEm or Kega Fusion.
