Bobby Prince, Legendary Composer of Doom and Wolfenstein 3D, Passes Away at 81
Robert Caskin "Bobby" Prince III, the American composer whose soundtracks defined the sonic identity of Doom, Wolfenstein 3D and Duke Nukem 3D, passed away on June 16, 2026 at the age of 81. A former U.S. Army lieutenant who served in Vietnam, Prince transitioned through law and counseling before turning to music, joining id Software as an independent contractor from Georgia and delivering heavy metal-infused MIDI compositions that perfectly matched the intensity of early first-person shooters.
His work on Commander Keen, Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, Doom II and Rise of the Triad shaped an entire generation of gamers. Just weeks before his passing, the Library of Congress had selected the Doom soundtrack for its National Recording Registry, officially recognizing its cultural and historical significance.
A musical legacy etched into video game history
John Romero, co-founder of id Software, paid tribute: "Everyone at Romero Games is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Bobby Prince. He left an incredible mark on games and on my life." Tom Hall, designer of Commander Keen, added: "His music legacy will live on. A true legend. And such a nice man, great musician." Prince received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the G.A.N.G. Awards in 2006. Source: Time Extension
