Capcom CPS3 on MiSTer FPGA: Street Fighter III and Red Earth boot, beta imminent

JOTEGO is about to release a beta of its JTCPS3 core for MiSTer FPGA, allowing Capcom CPS3 games like Street Fighter III and Red Earth to be played on FPGA hardware.

Developer JOTEGO is about to release a public beta of its core JTCPS3 for MiSTer FPGA. Games from the Capcom CPS3 system (1996) now run with all operational graphics layers, sound and sprites, including Street Fighter III and Red Earth.

The CPS3, the most difficult arcade card to recreate in FPGA

The Capcom Play System 3 is renowned for its technical complexity: it features a custom SH-2 CPU with advanced hardware protection (the famous "suicide battery" which erases data if the card is opened without precaution), SIMM graphics RAM and a proprietary decoding system. Recreating this hardware in FPGA logic represents a considerable challenge, which explains why no CPS3 core has been published until now on MiSTer.

JOTEGO, already author of the highly appreciated CPS1 and CPS2 cores on MiSTer, has confirmed that the following games boot correctly in its beta: Street Fighter III New Generation, Street Fighter III 2nd Impact, Street Fighter III 3rd Strike, Red Earth, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure and Warzard.

MiSTer and SiDi 128 compatible, not Analogue Pocket

The core will be available for MiSTer FPGA and SiDi 128, but not for the Analogue Pocket, whose memory limitations are incompatible with the amount of RAM required by the CPS3 system.
