This modder combined several PlayStation models to create the ultimate PS1 on custom PCB
What is the best original PlayStation? The SCPH-1002 for its sound, the SCPH-5502 for its stability, the SCPH-7002 for its sound card... The question has been debated for decades. The modder Secret Hobbyist decided to no longer choose, he created his own.
🔧 The project: a custom-made PS1
Secret Hobbyist a co designed a fully custom PCB (printed circuit) that allows him to combine the components of the different revisions of the original PlayStation. The goal: extract the best from each generation of PS1 hardware into a single cohesive machine.
This is the kind of project that requires a deep knowledge of Sony hardware from the 90s, electronic diagrams, behavior of the different GPU and SPU chips according to the revs isions, component compatibility... and above average soldering dexterity.
🎮 Why do PS1 revisions differ es?
Sony released numerous revisions of the PlayStation between 1994 and 2000 (SCPH-1000 to SCPH-9002 depending on the region). Each revision brought changes: improved video chip, revised audio circuit, different CD-ROM module, removal or addition of the parallel port (mod chip), revised consumption... There is no there is no “perfect” model, everyone has their strengths and limitations.
💡 What it represents for the scene
This type of custom PCB project is a new frontier for retro modding. Where classic mods modify existing hardware, Secret Hobbyist starts from scratch to recreate the best hardware possible. This is hardware preservation taken to its extreme.
