Commodore Launches the Callback 8020, a $500 Anti-Social Media Flip Phone
The recently revived Commodore brand is making waves with an unexpected product: the Callback 8020, a $499 flip phone designed to block social media, web browsers and email clients at the system level. Far from a simple gimmick, the device packs a 48-megapixel Sony sensor, audiophile-grade ESS DAC chips, a hinge rated for 200,000 openings and a Sailfish OS-based operating system developed in partnership with Finnish company Jolla.
The Callback 8020 comes in several editions: BASIC Beige, ProtoPET White and SX Silver at $499, a translucent Starlight Edition at $549 and a gold Founders Edition at $640. Pre-orders open on June 30 with delivery expected in Q4 2026. The phone even includes pre-installed Commodore 64 games and dome LEDs for ambient notifications.
A price tag that divides the retro community
Commodore defends its pricing by citing custom design costs and small production runs: "Nobody could sell this device for less," the company claims. However, a Time Extension poll revealed that 82% of respondents consider the price excessive for a phone that intentionally limits its features. Whether the Commodore brand's charm and the promise of a "digital detox" will be enough to win over nostalgics remains to be seen. Source: Time Extension
