Culdcept II is playable online again on Dreamcast, with an AI-assisted English translation
That is the second network resurrection in a few days on Dreamcast: after Sega Rally 2, it is now the turn of Culdcept II, a title that stayed Japan-only, to go online again. Dreamcast Live announced it on September 17, 2026, thanks to Shuouma, the developer already behind the online revival of several of the console's classics.
Culdcept II is described as a mix of Monopoly and Magic: The Gathering. You roll dice to move around a board, claim lots with monster cards, then fight other players or make them pay a toll. Up to four players can meet online, and since the game is turn-based, latency is not an issue.
What you need to play online
First you need a DreamPi, the server that simulates the old network, running on a Raspberry Pi or on a PC in a virtual machine. The connection goes through a modem only: the broadband adapter is not supported yet. In the Dreamcast's ISP settings you also have to set a unique login ID, because the default "dream" ID is blocked to prevent account sharing. Have the original game disc ready, then follow Dreamcast Live's connection guide, which reminds you never to put the Raspberry Pi's IP address in a DMZ.
The English translation patch is on the same site's downloads page. Shuouma states that it is AI-assisted and therefore imperfect, a sensitive point that Time Extension puts in the context of the current debate over such translations, often criticised for mistakes and a lack of nuance. It is better seen as a help to understand the rules than as a reference text.
