Dark Alien in Deep Space: A Brand New Survival Horror Game Lands on the Vectrex
The Vectrex homebrew scene continues to surprise with Dark Alien in Deep Space, a new survival horror game developed by studio AR Vectrex for Milton Bradley's legendary vector graphics console released in 1982. The player wakes up aboard a space station whose entire crew has mysteriously vanished, surrounded by unsettling noises, and must search the station to find a way to escape.
Played from a first-person perspective, the game features a radar that lets you track the position of an unbeatable alien you must avoid at all costs. Players must unlock crates using codes found on the station's screens to gather the equipment needed for their escape. Several difficulty modes are available, with the harder ones adding extra aliens, alongside multiple alternate endings to discover.
Two themed editions and one of the best overlays ever made for Vectrex
The game is available in two versions, Teria (green) and Solaris (yellow), each with its own map and its own difficulty variations. Each edition comes in a themed box with custom overlays for the screen and controller, an instruction card, and even a "boarding pass" style card, all for 79 euros plus shipping. In its review, Time Extension praises "the best overlay implementation ever seen on Vectrex" as well as a soundscape that blends perfectly with the console's characteristic electronic hum, for a final score of 8/10.
Both versions can be ordered directly from the official AR Vectrex website, which also offers other homebrew productions for the console.
