Donkey Kong 64 Now Runs Natively On PC, With No Emulator And No Generative AI

The team behind the DK64 Randomiser has released DK64 Rekongpiled, a native PC port of Rare's platformer with 4K, uncapped framerates and ultrawide support.

Donkey Kong 64 no longer needs an emulator to run on a computer. On 29 August 2026, the team made up of Rainchus, Ballaam, Killklli, 2dos and Umed released DK64 Rekongpiled 1.0.1, a native executable for Windows, macOS and Linux that runs Rare's game straight on the machine's processor. The project is built on N64: Recompiled, Wiseguy's tool that translates the original MIPS code into C before recompiling it for modern architectures.

The result is nothing like emulation in disguise. The port handles 4K, uncapped framerates, ultrawide displays and mouse controls, while noticeably cutting input latency compared with a traditional emulator. Mod support is included, starting with Tag Anywhere, which removes the mandatory barrel swap to change Kong - a mechanic many players considered the game's biggest chore back in 1999. Support for the DK64 Randomiser, already built by part of the same crew, is planned further down the line.

Not a single line of AI-generated code. The developers make a point of it: "no generative AI [was] used at any point in the process", the work having been carried out on the back of years of experience with the game's internals rather than through vibe coding. That clarification carries weight in a scene now flooded with projects rushed out using language models, and it has become a mark of quality among preservation enthusiasts.

The package, barely 17 MB, can be grabbed from the project's GitHub releases page, with one file per system. The official site dk64recomp.com walks through the setup step by step on Windows, Linux and macOS. One important caveat: the program ships with no game data and requires a US ROM of Donkey Kong 64 that players must dump from their own cartridge.
