Dragon Quest III is being ported to the Sega Mega Drive: an unofficial port shows its first footage

A fan known as junkatana is working on an unofficial Dragon Quest III port for the Mega Drive, with a new save system and visuals close to the SNES version.

Dragon Quest III, released in Japan in 1988 and in North America in 1991 as Dragon Warrior III, could soon find a new life on the Sega Mega Drive. A player known as junkatana revealed a short video of an unofficial port of Square Enix's RPG in early October 2026, shared notably by Renpou on X. The project is at a very early stage, and so far only a small work-in-progress clip has been seen.

According to the available information, the port would play with a standard Mega Drive controller and use visuals closer to the 1996 Super Nintendo remake than to the original NES version. The author plans several additions: a new save system, new shops, a new castle and a new inn, as well as sound improvements.

Many unknowns, including about AI

No release date or distribution method has been announced, and nothing says the project will be completed. The source outlet also notes that the illustration image appears to have been tweaked by AI and suspects such tools are used for minor tasks, though the author has not confirmed it. As always with fan projects based on a licensed work, the question of rights will be worth watching, and junkatana's video can be seen on YouTube to judge the progress.
