Dreamcast: New Universal USB Adapter Running JoypadOS Keeps VMU Support Intact
On June 8, 2026, modder Todd Gill unveiled a new adapter that lets players plug any USB controller into Sega's Dreamcast while keeping full compatibility with the VMU (Visual Memory Unit), the console's iconic memory card with a built-in screen. That's something the long-standing go-to solution, USB4Maple, was never able to offer.
The device runs JoypadOS, an open-source firmware already powering a wide range of adapters and custom controllers for retro consoles (GameCube, Nintendo 64, PC Engine, 3DO, Neo Geo, and more). The unit plugs directly into the Dreamcast's controller port, features its own LCD screen, a USB-A port that accepts controllers, keyboards, mice and arcade sticks, plus a microSD card slot on top for storing save data.
JoypadOS, an open-source firmware already embraced by a whole scene of retro controller modders
Available as version 2.1.0 since May 30, 2026, JoypadOS is open source (Apache-2.0 license) and runs on RP2040, ESP32-S3 or nRF52840 microcontrollers. The firmware can be downloaded for free from the project's GitHub releases page, and a detailed installation guide explains how to flash the board and configure the adapter, including profiles for GameCube, 3DO and Nuon.
