EarthBound Beginnings Remake: 19 Years in the Making, The First Mother Lives Again on SNES
It took nineteen years and multiple development teams, but the dream is now a reality. EarthBound Beginnings Remake is now available: a patch for a legally obtained copy of EarthBound (SNES) that recreates the entire first entry in the series, Mother (NES, 1989), using its sequel’s 16-bit engine and visuals. The patch is available for free on the project’s official site, which also includes an in-browser patcher for convenience.
The project’s history is almost as long as the games it celebrates. Professional Japanese translator Clyde Mandelin, known as “Tomato”, laid the groundwork in 2007. The community at Starmen.Net took over, followed by developer Gabbls who revived the stalled effort in 2021 with help from contributors Livvy94, H.S., and box art artist BigSharkZ. The final release arrived in June 2026, completing one of fan gaming’s longest-running projects.
A remarkable ROM hack that reimagines the saga’s first chapter.
This goes far beyond a simple port, delivering fully reworked graphics and audio in line with EarthBound’s 16-bit aesthetic. A companion patch called “EarthBound: Giygas Strikes Back” is also available for fans of the original game, adding quality-of-life improvements and newly styled artwork. For step-by-step patching instructions, a full guide is available on Romhacking.net.
