Square Enix Shrinks The CRT: Six Tiny Final Fantasy TVs That Play Their Themes

Square Enix Japan has unveiled the Final Fantasy Series Mini Melody TV, a collection of six figures reproducing in miniature the cathode-ray televisions on which entire generations discovered the series. Each model corresponds to one of the first six entries, released between 1987 and 1994 on Famicom and Super Famicom.

The object does more than look good on a shelf. A switch lights up the LED-backlit screen and triggers a melody tied to the game depicted, from the opening theme of the first Final Fantasy to Eternal Wind for Final Fantasy III. Each unit runs on an alkaline AAA battery, sold separately, and displays a pixel art scene taken from the corresponding title.

The retail approach uses the blind box format. There is no picking your entry at the till: each box contains one of the six models at random, for 1,980 yen including tax. The full case of six units is offered at 11,880 yen, with no guarantee of landing all six different designs, the usual wrinkle with this sort of collection in Japan.

The release is set for 29 January 2027 in Japan, with no international distribution announced at this stage. Pre-orders and the product listing are worth watching on the Square Enix online store, since the publisher generally moves this kind of line through its own channels before specialist retailers.
