FunnyPlaying Is Working on a Miniature Game Boy That Takes Real Cartridges

In early September 2026, the Chinese maker showed off a DMG shrunk to cartridge width, able to run original games as well as ROMs from an SD card. No price or date yet.

FunnyPlaying made its name in the retro scene with IPS screen kits for the Game Boy and its Retro Pixel Pocket line. In early September 2026, the Chinese manufacturer put out a short video showing its next machine: a miniature Game Boy DMG, shrunk down to barely more than the width of a cartridge, with the cartridge slot on top just like the 1989 original.

Everything has been scaled down, from the d-pad to the face buttons, except the screen: it reportedly keeps a diagonal of around 2.6 inches, meaning a display area comparable to a classic Game Boy on a far smaller shell. The console reads original Game Boy and Game Boy Color cartridges, and the demonstration also shows an SD card slot for loading ROM files, driven by the company's own software interface.

Everything else is still unknown. FunnyPlaying has disclosed neither the chipset nor the battery capacity, nor a price or any release window, saying only that a new console is coming soon. With the brand's previous handhelds sitting around the fifty pound mark, this one is unlikely to aim high, but the official announcement on the manufacturer's site will be needed to know for sure.

The niche is crowded: between the Analogue Pocket, FPGA boards and the many software-only Chinese handhelds, the physical cartridge format still draws a crowd. What will decide this mini DMG's reception is the same as for its rivals: genuine compatibility with period cartridges and screen quality.
