Museum Curator Compresses 25 Years of Game Boy Collecting Into a Playable Cartridge Database

Dr. Marcel Pflug, curator of the Game Boy Museum, packed over 360 catalogued items into a ROM that runs directly on real Game Boy hardware.

Dr. Marcel Pflug, who has documented Game Boy hardware and software for 25 years through his unofficial Game Boy Museum site, announced on September 18 that he had transposed his entire collection into a playable Game Boy ROM. Over 360 catalogued items (consoles, games, accessories, promotional media) are accessible as write-ups, complete with a search engine built directly into the game's firmware.

The cartridge also includes guides on the console's history and how to spot bootleg cartridges, plus QR codes linking each entry back to the corresponding page on the website, scannable directly from the Game Boy's screen. Dr. Pflug sums up the project in one line: "A museum object that is itself a museum; a format from 1994, drawn by a PC, shown on hardware from 1989, read by a phone from today."

The ROM doesn't contain any playable games as such: it's primarily a reference database, designed to run just as well on an emulator as on an original Game Boy DMG-01. The project illustrates a growing trend among preservationists to use retro hardware itself as an archival medium rather than just a subject of study.

The ROM is available for free download on the official Game Boy Museum website, which also explains how to install it on a flashcart to run it on original hardware.
