GB Bridge: a revolutionary tool for porting Game Boy games to GBA natively

Iván Delgado (@toruzz) reveals GB Bridge, a tool that converts Game Boy and Game Boy Color games into native Game Boy Advance games. Not a classic emulator: a "ghost console" which uses the GBA hardware to offer more colors, more resolution, and GBA inputs.

Iván Delgado, homebrew developer known in the Game Boy community for his work on game colorization, has just revealed his most ambitious project: GB Bridge. A tool capable of porting Game Boy and Game Boy Color games to Game Boy Advance, natively, without emulation classic ation.

🌉 How does it work?

GB Bridge is not a simple GB emulator running on GBA, those already exist. Delgado built something more subtle: a“ghost console”that sits between the GB and the GBA. Here’s how he describes it himself:

"GB Bridge is basically a GBC with a different memory map, a bigger screen, and additional inputs. The real trick is that I'm using special registers. to trigger native GBA routines from the emulator, which means that, although very difficult to implement, I can push things as far as I want."

In practice: GB games are converted to GBA ROMs which exploit the real console hardware. The end result is a native GBA game, like the “Classic NES Series” compilations that Nintendo sold on GBA in the 2000s, but for Game Boy.

🎨 The av concrete benefits

  • Extended resolution, the GBA (240×160) screen is wider than the GBC (160×144), providing additional usable space
  • More colors, the GBA supports a much higher palette than the GBC
  • Additional inputs, the L and R buttons of the GBA, absent from the GB
  • Native performance, no emulation overhead

🔧 Where is the project?

Delgado is currently working on a test with Super Mario Land. The GIFs shared on Twitter show visually convincing mockups of the final result. The developer is clear: this is a long-term project, no imminent release to hope for. But the proof of concept is there, and the  implications for Game Boy fans are considerable. >Eventually, GB Bridge could enable the entire GB/GBC catalogue to be played on GBA under improved conditions, with community-published conversions for games without problematic DRM.
