Ghostbusters Special Edition 3.0: 'The Single Largest Upgrade' Ever for the Cult Mega Drive Hack
Modder BillyTime!Games, working alongside Master Linkuei and Danilo Dias, is preparing what he himself describes as "the single largest upgrade" ever made to Ghostbusters Special Edition, his celebrated ROM hack of the 1990 Sega Genesis/Mega Drive Ghostbusters game. This upcoming version 3.0, still deep in development, will introduce animated versions of all four main characters from the classic The Real Ghostbusters (1986-1991) cartoon for the first time, each with their own unique gameplay mechanics.
The hack, already available as version 2.1 since late 2024, adds a Nightmare difficulty mode, SRAM save support, new cheat modes, and unlocks Winston Zeddemore as a playable character, a long-criticized omission from the original release. Version 3.0 will go even further with upgrades for Janine Melnitz and Sigma, plus "very large secrets" that require specific hardware and software workarounds, leaning on bank switching to hide extra content.
Confirmed to work on the Mega Everdrive Pro and the Sega Channel Revival MiSTer core, but not on every emulator
BillyTime!Games warns that some of the hidden content may not function correctly on every emulator or flash cart, with testing so far confirmed on Genesis Plus GX, the Mega Everdrive Pro, and the Sega Channel Revival MiSTer core developed by iequalshane. No release date has been set for version 3.0, but in the meantime the current 2.1 release can be downloaded for free from romhacking.net and applied to your ROM using the free Floating IPS (Flips) tool.
