Gradius Advance revised and corrected: a fan patch transforms the GBA shoot into a reference experience
Gradius Advance (known in Japan as Gradius Generation) was released in 2001 for the Game Boy Advance. Considered an honest but frustrating episode of the series, it suffered from a few flaws that prevented it from achieving excellence. A passionate developer just fixed all that.
allanrps released a comprehensive improvement patch called BLACK LABEL on May 25, 2026, which profoundly transforms the gaming experience:
- Dynamic Rank display: the internal difficulty level, previously invisible, is now displayed in real time
- High visibility projectiles: enemy bullets are more readable, reducing “unfair” deaths
- Additional new weapons in the Vic Viper's arsenal
- Improved bosses for a more interesting and consistent experience
- Training mode to practice difficult passages
- Reduced slowdown during enemy-heavy sequences
- Reworked palette suitable for modern IPS screens and GBA SP AGS-101
Warning: the patch makes the game significantly more difficult than the original. It is aimed at experienced players in the genre and not beginners. The developers advise mastering the original version first before getting started.
The patch is available on ROMhacking.net and is intended for the international GBA ROM. It works perfectly on emulator (mGBA) as well as on EZ-Flash or EverDrive GBA flashcart.
