MegaWiFi: play online on your Sega Mega Drive with this Kickstarter adapter
MegaWiFi, an adapter designed by Spanish developer Juan Antonio Ruiz Pachón, promises to connect the Sega Mega Drive (Genesis) to the Internet to enable multiplayer online gaming. The project has just launched a Kickstarter campaign with a goal of 1,500 euros.
How it works
The MegaWiFi adapter connects to the cartridge port of the Mega Drive and integrates a WiFi module. It comes with an open source software library allowing developers to create games with network functions: matchmaking, online scores, remote updates. A playable demo with the classic Battle City was presented during the campaign launch.
Juan Antonio Ruiz Pachón sums up his vision: "Free the Mega Drive from the shackles of local gaming and give it the capabilities of modern networks." The goal is not only online multiplayer gaming, but also to open the console to new experiences: downloadable content, global rankings, cloud saves.
State of the campaign
The Kickstarter campaign had exceeded 1,268 euros with 42 days remaining when it went live. Estimated delivery in December 2026. Complete kit includes adapter, power cable and developer documentation.
