Minicraft 3D: a developer gets a real three-dimensional Minecraft-like world running on Game Boy Color

Homebrew developer Brendan "Game of Tobi" Friedly releases Minicraft 3D, a playable wireframe Minecraft recreation for the Game Boy Color, complete with destructible blocks and an explorable Nether.

German-American homebrew developer Brendan Tobias Friedly, known as Game of Tobi, released Minicraft 3D on July 8, 2026, a project that manages to render a recognizable three-dimensional environment on a Game Boy Color, hardware originally designed exclusively for 2D. The title isn't a straight port but an original recreation inspired by Minecraft, rendered in textured wireframe.

Minicraft 3D offers two play modes: a randomly generated world to freely explore, and a flat terrain built for creative building. Players can break and place blocks and explore an accessible Nether, though the game still lacks mechanics such as an inventory, a health bar or mobs. Texture support exists but heavily impacts performance, so the developer recommends playing without textures for a smoother experience.

Remarkably, the ROM also runs on an original monochrome Game Boy, albeit at half speed and in black and white, showing the scale of the optimization work Friedly put in - he's already known for porting Super Mario 64 to the Game Boy Advance and for an earlier Minecraft port on that same console.

The .gbc ROM file can be downloaded for free from Game of Tobi's Patreon. To run it without original hardware or a flash cart, the free mGBA emulator lets you launch the file directly on PC for a quick hands-on start.
