MiSTer FPGA: Darius II and The Ninja Warriors in development, the multi-screen Taito giants are arriving

After the core Darius delivered last month, developer Umberto Parisi is tackling Darius II and The Ninja Warriors, two other Taito classics with multi-screen displays. The first attract screens are already running on MiSTer hardware.

The developer Umberto Parisi, to whom we owe the core Darius released in April on MiSTer FPGA, has just unveiled his next targets: Darius II and The Ninja Warriors. Two other Taito classics sharing the same spectacular feature: a multi-screen display.

🚀 Darius II - the successor has one pproach

Released in 1989, Darius II (also known as Sagaia outside of Japan) is a direct sequel to the original shmup. Like its predecessor, it was displayed in arcade on two screens side by sideforming an ultra-wide panorama. The core MiSTer is still in early WIP: the first captures show the attract screen working, with sprite glitches still present. But the game runs on real MiSTer hardware, which is already a milestone.

🥷 The Ninja Warriors - triple screen on the way

Even more ambitious: The Ninja Warriors (Taito, 1987) was a beat-em-up shown on three screens, just like the original Darius. The game featured two robotic ninjas fighting evil corporations in dystopian Japan. Its visual achievement was stunning for the time, and the soundtrack by Hisayoshi Ogura has remained legendary. The core is also at the very early stage of development, with an attract screen which shows that the architectural foundations are laid.

💡 A development prolific fear on Taito

systems Umberto Parisi is becoming the reference for multi-screen Taito arcade cores on MiSTer. After delivering Darius (triple screen, five ROM sets supported), he continues on these two titles which share the same basic architecture. If progression follows the same pace as Darius I, we can hope for playable builds within a few weeks or months.

To follow the progress of both cores, visit the MiSTer FPGA forum and the community Discord.
