MiSTer FPGA: RetroAchievements in HARDCORE mode available, a world first on FPGA

The developer odelot has integrated RetroAchievements in HARDCORE mode directly into MiSTer FPGA cores. This is a world first: hardcore hits, which require zero save state and zero cheating, now run on real FPGA hardware. NES first, other systems on the way.

The RetroAchievements community has just reached a historic milestone. Until now, achievements in HARDCOREmode (which prohibit save states, rewinds and cheat codes) were only available on software emulators. Developer odelot just changed that by integrating RetroAchievements directly into MiSTer cores FPGAforced.

🏆 What is HARDCORE mode?

RetroAchievements offers two modes to unlock its achievements. The softcore mode allows save states and other facilities - convenient but considered ‘easy’ by the competitive community. Hardcore mode requires playing the game exactly as it was originally intended: no save state, no rewind, no cheat, no idle. This is the condition for scores and badges to really count on the overall rankings.

🎮 Now available on real hardw are FPGA

What makes Odelot's achievement remarkable is that the MiSTer FPGA reproduces hardware in silicon - not software. Integrating RetroAchievements into this context is much more complex than in a classic emulator, because there is no easily accessible “software layer” to read the game memory state in real time.

Current status of the project:

  • NES: HARDCORE mode fully functional
  • SNES, N64, PS1, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Mega Drive, Master System, Game Gear: softcor mode e available, hardcore in development
  • Other systems to come gradually

⚙️ How to use it

Cores with RetroAchievements support are available on odelot's GitHub fork. They require a RetroAchievements account (free at retroachievements.org). The configuration is done via the OSD menu of the MiSTer by entering their credentials. Once connected, achievements are unlocked in real time during the game, exactly like on the emulator, but on real FPGA hardware. >For competitors and achievement hunters who keen on playing on cycle-accurate hardware, this is a revolution. It gives a new reason for the MiSTer FPGA beyond the simple authenticity of emulation.
