ModRetro M64: An FPGA Console to Relive Nintendo 64 in 4K
ModRetro announces the M64, an AMD FPGA console emulating Nintendo 64 at hardware level with HDMI output. Release planned for July 28, 2026.
ModRetro, the studio behind the Chromatic (a faithful Game Boy recreation), has just announced the M64. Unlike classic software emulators, this console relies on an AMD Artix UltraScale+ FPGA to reproduce Nintendo 64 hardware down to the transistor level. Rather than interpreting game code through software, the chip reconfigures its circuits to behave exactly like the original hardware.
Confirmed specifications
- Native compatibility with original Nintendo 64 cartridges
- Support for original N64 and modern controllers
- HDMI output with native 4K upscaling
- AMD Artix UltraScale+ FPGA chip
- Release date: July 28, 2026
The M64 fits into the broader trend of FPGA consoles democratizing authentic retro gaming experiences on modern televisions.
