Need for Speed Underground 2 in Unreal Engine 5: AI Traffic, Outrun and Free Races - 75% project
The fan remake of Need for Speed Underground 2 in Unreal Engine 5 continues to advance in serious way. The project, created by developer apfelbaum under the name 2Unreal5Underground (aka TUFU), has just released a new gameplay video that shows several features m features that were missing in the initial demo.
What the new showcase shows
The video shows for the first time:
- Dynamic AI traffic - cars circling t freely in Bayview
- Free roam opponents - challengers can be challenged spontaneously in town
- Outrun Racesacross the city
Revised driving physics - sliding and handling have been reworked
Where is the project?
apfelbaum announces the project at 75% complete. Remaining planned features include full career mode, full open world Bayview, multiplayer, co-op, and tuning system expansion. This isn't a 1:1 port - it's a real remake with additions and improvements.
A free demo is available via the project's Discord. It does not represent the current state of development but gives a good idea of the potential. No release date announced.
The EA risk
As for all fan-made game projects under active license, the risk of intervention by EA looms. NFSU2 is not legally available on modern platforms, but EA is keeping an eye on fan projects of the series. The community hopes that the project will be completed before any intervention.
