Neo Geo AES+ pushed back a year over memory chip shortage
Originally slated for November 2026, the Neo Geo AES+ will now not ship before September 16, 2027. Publisher Plaion, which manufactures this faithful, licensed remake of SNK's legendary console, confirmed the year-long delay while keeping existing pre-orders in place at their original price.
The culprit is a global memory chip shortage, driven directly by the explosion in demand for components used in AI infrastructure. Plaion says it was unable to secure the memory volumes needed to manufacture the console as planned, forcing the team to rework part of the hardware design midway through production.
Real hardware, not emulation
Unlike many recent retro remakes, the Neo Geo AES+ doesn't emulate its games: it runs on re-engineered ASIC chips that faithfully replicate the original hardware, while adding modern conveniences such as low-latency HDMI output, the original AV output for CRT purists, DIP switches for overclocking and language selection, and high score saving via memory card. It remains compatible with original AES cartridges.
