Ninku: the Saturn fighting game based on the 90s anime finally translated into English
Do you know Ninku? Probably not if you didn't grow up in Japan in the 90s. Yet it's a cult manga and anime of the era-and it got its own he fighting game on Sega Saturn, released exclusively in Japan in 1995. Until now, the language barrier made access difficult. It's now finished.
👊 Ninku - what is exactly?
Ninku is a cel-shaded fighting game in cartoon style, visually very close to the fighting game Yu Yu Hakusho on 3DO. The main character, Fūsuke, is a warrior of the Ninku school - a particularly powerful humanoid frog - who fights evil corporations named after the animals of the Chinese zodiac. The game was a Saturn exclusive in Japan, never released outside.
🌍 A shadow drop translation by Exxistance
Homebrew developer Exxis tance, already known in the Sega Saturn community for several translation projects, dropped this patch completely unexpectedly - without prior announcement. The translation covers all menus, game texts, and interfaces, making the title fully playable for non-Japanese speakers.
A few quality of life improvements have also been integrated alongside. It should be noted that Exxistance was alone on this project - which suggests that AI assistance may have been used for the translation, as is becoming common in the fan translation scene. This does not decrease the technical work done.
📥 How to apply
The patch is available for free download on GitHub. To apply it, you will need a legal copy of the Ninku on Saturn game and a compatible patching tool. Once patched, the game is playable on real Saturn via ODE (Rhea/Phoebe, MODE...) or on emulator.
