Panzer Dragoon is getting an unofficial Dreamcast port, and it's already playable
Frogbull, a developer already known in the homebrew scene for running impressive technical demos on the Sega Saturn (Metal Gear Solid, Crash Bandicoot, and Final Fantasy VII among them), has just revealed their next project: porting Panzer Dragoon, the beloved 1995 rail shooter, to the Dreamcast. The developer has spent the past several months decompiling the original Saturn game, a necessary first step before it can be adapted to Sega's next console.
The first footage shown comes from a very early build, version 0.1, but it's already running on real Dreamcast hardware rather than in emulation. More details on the development process, along with a demo, are available through the developer's Patreon.
A rail shooter that could finally get the power it deserves
Panzer Dragoon left a mark back in 1995 with its real-time 3D environments and aerial dragon-riding combat, but the Saturn sometimes struggled to keep up technically. A native Dreamcast port, running on hardware far more powerful than its predecessor, could finally let the game run the way it was meant to. The Dreamcast community, known for staying homebrew-active years after Sega discontinued the console, welcomed the announcement enthusiastically.
No release date has been announced yet for a public version of the project.
