Phoenix Wright ported to original Game Boy, 6 months of work, the first complete case, and a free ROM

Developer 2bitcrook spent 6 months bringing the first episode of Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney on the original Game Boy, in black and white, to the tiny screen of the Game Boy Pocket. The ROM is free, playable in an emulator or directly in a browser.

This is the kind of homebrew project that makes the round of the retro community in a few days. The developer known as 2bitcrook (aka Game Boy Demakes) has just released a complete port of the first case of Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney on Game Boy original. Six months of work, a free ROM, and a result that surprised everyone.

🎮 What is it exactly?

A demakeis the opposite of a remaster: instead of updating the graphics of an old game, you take a modern game and recreate it on older hardware. Here, the challenge is to run Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (2001 on GBA in Japan, 2005 on DS in the West) on the Original DMG Game Boy, the little grey green brick from 1989, with its 160x144 pixel monochrome screen.

The result covers the entire first case, "The First Turnabout", recognizable characters, adapted OST, complete cross-examination system, functional menus. All this on a 35-year-old console.

💬 6 months of work - 2bitcrook's biggest project

In an interview given to the French blog Blog2Geeks, the developer detailed the scale of the challenge:

“I worked on it for 6 months. It’s pretty surreal to have to reassure people that it’s REALLY playable! This is my most ambitious demake to date. »

Biggest technical challenge? The dialogue system during cross-examinations, being able to access the menu at any time and memorize exactly what part of the interrogation the player was in. Not simple on such limited hardware. style="user-select: auto;">For the music, digitized WAV files were used for voices and effects, and a composer adapted the original soundtrack via the Midi2uge tool. For the graphics, 2bitcrook exploited the Game Boy's sprites and tile management in a creative way, the character animations are surprisingly smooth.

🕹️ How to play

The ROM is available for free at itch.io. Three ways to play:

  • On a real Game Boy, via a flash cartridge. The Game Boy Pocket is recommended by the developer for its visual rendering
  • On emulator, BGB, Sameboy or Mesen. Activate frame blending for better rendering
  • In your browser, directly on the itch.io page, without installing anything

The ROM is also compatible Pocket Analogue (.pocket file included) and all the classic Game Boy emulators.

⚖️ And Capcom in all this?

2bitcrook chose to only cover the first case, partly out of caution with Capcom, even though the Japanese publisher is generally known for its tolerance towards fanworks. Donations are disabled, the ROM is free, and partial source code is available so other developers can draw inspiration. Class.
