Pokémon Snap recreates in demake PS1 and 3DS version, the N64 and the PlayStation exchange their catalogs
This week, the homebrew scene is giving us a fun moment of symmetry. On the same day that Lara Croft finally arrived on Nintendo 64 thirty years later, Pokémon Snap, the 1999 N64 exclusive, is being ported to PlayStation 1. And on 3DS. The platforms are exchanging their retro exclusives.
📸 The project
Developer Manuel Rodríguez Matesanz (@ManuDev95) is working simultaneously on two demake versions of Pokémon Snap: p>
- PS1Version, developed under Unity 6 with the PSX Exporter, which allows to apply the visual effects characteristic of the PlayStation (dithering, affine texture mapping, low resolution...). A test build already exists, visible in the video shared on Twitter.
- 3DS version, developed under Unity 5, entirely rebuilt from scratch, it does not require the original ROM to work. A more ambitious project that takes the time to do things properly.
🎮 Pokémon Snap, what is it?
For those under 25: Pokémon Snap was released in 19 99 on N64, a rail photo shooter where you move on rails through environments inhabited by Pokémon and you try to photograph them in the best conditions. Simple, relaxing, and visually gorgeous for the time. Nintendo never really ported the original game to other platforms (besides Virtual Console), and the sequel New Pokémon Snap on Switch dates 2021.
⏳ Availability
Both projects are still under development, no downloadable ROM yet. Manuel shares his progress on Twitter/X (@ManuDev95). One to watch for.
