AYANEO formalizes the end of 4 of its handhelds, KONKR Pocket FIT G3/8 Elite, Pocket DS and Pocket Air Mini B.Duck, due to the global RAM component crisis. DRAM prices soared 90% in Q1 2026, and the entire retro laptop market is paying the price.

>The emulation handheld market is going through its most severe crisis in 2026 since the explosion of the scene in the early 2020s. The cause: A global RAM shortage dubbed “RAMageddon” by the community, the effects of which are felt at all levels. And AYANEO has just provided the latest illustration to date.

💥 AYANEO officially discontinues 4 devices

On April 28, 2026, AYANEO has p posted an official announcement on its Discord: four of its handhelds are discontinueddue to high RAM and storage costs. Affected models:

  • KONKR Pocket FIT G3 Gen 3
  • KONKR Pocket FIT 8 Elite
  • Pocket DS
  • Pocket Air Mini B.Duck Edition

For each model, there are between 30 and 50 units only, available first come first served. Once the stock is exhausted, it’s finished, no new production is planned. AYANEO announces in the same communication price increases on other products in its range.

📉 Why does RAM cost so expensive?

The answer is in two letters: IA. The datacenters of artificial intelligence giants, OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, Meta, have an insatiable hunger for high-performance memory (HBM and LPDDR). Foundries Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron have massively reoriented their production lines toward this high-margin premium memory, to the detriment of consumer DRAM. Result according to TrendForce: contractual DRAM prices climbed from 90 to 95% in the first quarter of 2026. Memory accounted for 15 at 18% of the cost of an electronic device, it now represents nearly 35%.

🌊 The entire scene is affected

AYANEO is far from being alone. The crisis picture in 2026:

  • Valve Steam Deck OLED: intermittently out of stock since February, officially recognized as due. to memory shortages
  • Steam Machine / Steam Frame: release date still unknown
  • Retroid: price increase on the P ocket Classic (+20$)
  • AYN: price increase on Thor and Odin 3, Odin 3 Ultra suspended
  • AYANEO NEXT 2: pre-orders annual lated in March, the cost of production had “nearly doubled the selling price”

🔮 When will it get better?

Not soon, according to analysts. Counterpoint Research indicates that there is “no scenario where memory prices correct in the second half of 2027.” IDC explicitly states that it does not expect a return to 2025 price levels within its forecast horizon. For emulation handheld manufacturers who operate on very tight margins and small production volumes, this crisis is potentially existential. >For buyers: if you're aiming for a high-end handheld in 2026, the advice is simple, don't wait, because the prices will only go up and some models will disappear permanently.
