Red Viper 1.3.3 finally makes Dragon Hopper, one of the last Virtual Boy games, playable on 3DS
Red Viper, the Virtual Boy emulator for Nintendo 3DS developed by skyfloogle, reaches a new milestone with the release of version 1.3.3. This homebrew project, which continues the work started by r3Ddragon, relies on a dynamic recompiler to run Nintendo's 3D console games at full speed even on an original 3DS, at a time when authentic Virtual Boy hardware is becoming rarer and more expensive to maintain.
The headline change in this update concerns Dragon Hopper, a platform game developed by Intelligent Systems and released late in the Virtual Boy's short life. Until now, its backgrounds made of multiple affine layers caused serious performance issues under Red Viper, making the game nearly unplayable at times.
Optimized rendering for the most demanding backgrounds
Version 1.3.3 specifically optimizes rendering of these affine worlds spanning multiple background maps, the technique used by Dragon Hopper. As a result, the game now runs properly on both New 3DS and the original 3DS, even with the stereoscopic 3D effect enabled to recreate the original Virtual Boy sensation.
Red Viper can be downloaded for free from the project's GitHub releases page and is most easily installed through Universal Updater on an already modded 3DS; .vb ROM files can then be placed anywhere on the SD card.
