Rumour: Sega May Be Working On A Low-Cost Handheld With Removable Game Cartridges

A rumour that has been stirring the retro gaming world since June 4, 2026 claims that Sega is working on a very affordable handheld console fitted with removable game cartridges. The information comes from a Reddit user going by SeraphHS, who says they work for a small electronics manufacturer that received a quote request from a company known for producing licensed Sega hardware in the past.

According to this source, the device would use a low-power ARM processor (so no x86 architecture), a 5-inch OLED screen close to the Vita's form factor, fairly limited internal storage and serious cost-cutting elsewhere on the spec sheet. No real 3D acceleration would be included beyond the interface, with the whole machine apparently designed around "modern 2D titles" and a pixel art presentation.

Cartridges that look a lot like memory cards

Amusingly, these supposed removable cartridges would actually be simple low-end industrial eMMC modules, a type of memory that is cheap and widely available in consumer electronics. SeraphHS themselves admits that most pitches like this never turn into real products, but believes this particular one genuinely came out of Sega's orbit. With no official confirmation in sight, this rumour is best taken with a very large grain of salt.
