ScreenDrive 64: this N64 flash card has an integrated screen that displays the cover of the loaded game

A Mexican maker has created an N64 flash card with a built-in LCD screen that changes images depending on the game loaded. 128 MB FPGA, 3D printed package, ~$50. It's the kind of crazy project that proves that the N64 scene is more alive than ever.

We saw flash carts for N64, we saw custom cases, we saw mods of all kinds. But a flash cart with an integrated LCD screen that displays the cover of the loaded game, that’s new.

🖥️ The ScreenDrive 64, what is it?

The ScreenDrive 64 is a handcrafted N64 flash cart created by Mexican developer David "DAVIDXGAMESmx" Brito. It plugs into the cartridge slot of a Nintendo 64 like any cartridge, but it hides a visual trick: a small LCD screen in N64 cover format which dynamically adapts to the game you've loaded.

Charge GoldenEye → the screen shows the GoldenEye cover. Launches Ocarina of Time → this is the cover of OoT that appears. Simple, elegant, and damn satisfying.

🔧 Under the hood

Technically, the ScreenDrive 64 runs on a 128 MB FPGA with a hardware compatible PicoCart. The case is 3D printed, to the exact dimensions of an original N64 cartridge. The screen is obscured to imitate the shape of an N64 label, not pixel perfect (some covers are slightly cropped), but the effect is immediately recognizable.

💡 A concept to follow

The ScreenDrive 64 doesn’t yet have the premium look of an EverDrive or a SummerCart64, the case remains 3D printed, and the screen is not the exact dimensions of the original labels. But David is considering a pre-order/crowdfunding campaign for a final version in an injected case, which could change everything.

RetroRGB, which covered the project, notes that this concept is worthy of being integrated into other flash carts. Seeing the cover of your game displayed in real time on the cartridge itself, is a level of care for the physical experience that is rarely seen.

💰 Price and availability

The ScreenDrive 64 sells for 1200 Mexican pesos when David has stock, or around €50. For now, sales go directly through David on his networks. Follow @DAVIDXGAMESmx for stock announcements. >Sources: RetroRGB - Time Extension - Retro Dodo
