Capcom Shuts Down The SEGA VS CAPCOM: The Next Level Fan Game
The dream lasted a month. SEGA VS CAPCOM: The Next Level, a fan fighting game developed over several years by 4CYDE Studios, was shut down in early September 2026 following a request from Capcom. The Japanese publisher took issue with the project's use of its characters, its logo and its trademarks. Season 1 had launched on 7 August 2026, after a development cycle carried out in the open and followed by a sizeable community.
The team announced the news without any visible bitterness. In its statement, it made clear the shutdown came down purely to the use of Capcom characters and likeness, and nothing else. Notably, Sega does not appear anywhere in the proceedings: it was the Capcom half of the crossover that caused the problem, even though the title put both catalogues front and centre.
A risk they knew about from day one. The developers never pretended not to know how a project like this could end. They said they have no regrets and are glad they made it as far as a complete Season 1 release, thanking everyone who took part. That clear-eyed attitude has become the norm in the fan fighting game scene, where projects are built in the knowledge that a cease and desist can arrive at any moment.
The case illustrates a line Japanese publishers are drawing ever more sharply: tolerance for fan tributes ends where licensed characters and official logos begin. For players the outcome is always the same, years of work vanishing from official circulation overnight, while no commercial alternative exists in that particular niche.
