shadPS4 v0.16.0: the biggest update in the PS4 emulator's history

Codenamed "Plutie-fueled," shadPS4 0.16.0 overhauls the configuration system, adds a proper OpenAL audio backend, PS4 camera emulation and local multiplayer, while fixing dozens of Vulkan graphics bugs.

On July 13, 2026, the shadPS4 project released version 0.16.0, nicknamed "Plutie-fueled," which the team describes as the biggest update in the emulator's history. The open-source PlayStation 4 emulator, available on Windows, Linux, macOS and FreeBSD, kicks off a rework of its configuration system with this release, now supporting per-game settings instead of a single global profile.

On the audio side, shadPS4 introduces a brand-new OpenAL-based backend, a milestone the team considers a major step for the project. The emulator now supports up to four controllers at once and introduces a user manager capable of creating up to sixteen accounts, mirroring the real PS4 interface. A Big Picture mode built for couch, controller-only play also debuts, alongside initial support for PlayStation Camera emulation.

On the graphics front, 0.16.0 fixes a huge number of Vulkan stability issues (validation errors, synchronization, swapchain handling) along with numerous mipmapping artifacts, and expands support for the PS4 Pro's "Neo" GPU instructions; several demanding titles, including the unofficial Bloodborne remaster currently in development, benefit directly.

The Windows and Linux builds are free to grab from the official shadPS4 downloads page, and newcomers to the emulator can follow the official quickstart guide to dump their firmware and configure the emulator step by step.
