Sony announces PlayStation Store shutdown on PS3 and PS Vita

Sony confirmed on July 1, 2026 that it will gradually shut down the PlayStation Store on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita, closing out nearly two decades of digital sales on both platforms. According to the schedule posted on the PlayStation Blog, Mexico, Honduras and Nicaragua will be the first affected as early as August 2026, followed by the rest of Latin America and the Middle East by the end of the year. Other major territories, including the US and UK, will keep store access until July 2027.

Once the closure takes effect in a region, it will no longer be possible to buy new games, add-ons or extra content on PS3 and PS Vita. Sony notes, however, that users will still be able to re-download previously purchased content for the foreseeable future, an important nuance for players with large digital libraries on these consoles.

The move revives concerns about digital game preservation, coming shortly after Sony also signaled its intent to eventually phase out physical PlayStation game discs.

Sony argues that hardware nearly twenty years old can no longer keep up with modern payment processing standards and commerce systems. The news comes as the Video Game History Foundation keeps pressing the ESA for a legal path to preserve digital-only games, a topic RetroVault recently covered regarding the future of PlayStation physical media.
