Super Robot Wars 4: the English fan translation is finally out, 31 years on

Over the weekend of 22 August 2026, the Aeon Genesis group released its English translation patch for Dai 4 Ji Super Robot Taisen, a 1995 Super Famicom strategy RPG that was never localised.

Aeon Genesis Translations released the English translation patch for Dai 4 Ji Super Robot Taisen, known to importers as Super Robot Wars 4, over the weekend of 22 August 2026. The strategy RPG came out on the Super Famicom in 1995 and had never had an official localisation, a wait of thirty-one years.

The project was handled by a six-person team led by rom hacker Gideon Zhi. They had to deal with an unusable first translation pass, then fix issues with name entry, karaoke-mode timing, the title-screen animation and the sprites used for battle pop-ups. "This project has been a long time coming, and has not been without difficulty," Gideon Zhi writes in the readme file.

Bonus fixes bundled with the patch. Alongside the standard version, the team offers a music-persistence patch and an optional fix that adds English lyrics for a 1970s dub of the Mazinger Z theme. The patch can be downloaded from the official Aeon Genesis site as well as the romhack.ing database. To apply it you need a copy of the Japanese ROM and a utility such as Floating IPS: the steps are laid out in this step-by-step patching guide.

The Super Robot Wars series, a huge crossover of mecha licences such as Gundam, Mazinger and Getter Robo, remains almost entirely unreleased in the West for rights reasons, which is why fan translations of its classic entries stay so active.
