Super ZSNES: The original creators of ZSNES return with a completely rewritten, GPU-powered SNES emulator

Almost 30 years after ZSNES, its two original creators zsKnight and Demo return with Super ZSNES, completely rewritten from scratch, powered by GPU, with a Super Enhancement Engine which allows SNES games to be remastered in HD manually game by game.

In 1997, two passionate developers released ZSNES, one of the first truly usable Super Nintendo emulators, which introduced millions of players to emulation via a memorable DOS interface with its falling snow. Almost 30 years later, zsKnight and Demoare back with Super ZSNES. Completely rewritten from scratch. Powered by GPU. And available now.

🎮 Why rewrite ZSNES in 2026?

zsKnight explains it himself: while thinking about what he could do differently, he came up with an idea that really changed things. "I started by writing a GPU renderer that replaced much of the SNES PPU emulation with rendering done mainly on the GPU via shaders."

This is the heart of Super ZSNES. Where all classic SNES emulators calculate the display on the CPU, Super ZSNES hands this job to the graphics card. Concretely: palette lookups, tile rendering, transparencies, Mode 7, color math, main/subscreen combinations, mosaic effects, everything is managed in GPU shaders. The challenge was real: the SNES architecture is CRT based, the GPUs are geometry based. zsKnight enjoyed solving this problem.

✨ The Super Enhancement Engine

The real selling point of Super ZSNES is its Super Enhancement Engine (SEE). This is not algorithmic upscaling, it is a radically different approach. The team manually redraws the graphics of each game to create native HD versionsof SNES classics, without distortion and without losing the original style. >For supported games, SEE unlocks:

  • HD graphics, manually redrawn sprites and backgrounds
  • High-resolution Mode 7with 3D height maps (F-Zero, Super Mario Kart...)
  • Wide screen, where the game permits
  • Integrated overclocking, to eliminate the slowdown of some games
  • Uncompressed audioenhanced

At launch, 7 games benefit from SEE. But the developers plan to open the system to the community, which means modders will be able to create their own enhancement packs. As someone in the Retro Handhelds community summarized well: Super ZSNES allows you to do "HD remaster type mods without having to do a compile com complete game."

⚙️ Which is already there

  • Much more accurate CPU and audio than the original ZSNES
  • Fast forward, rewind, save states, auto-save, bookmarks, c heats, quick load
  • Classic interface with falling snow, modernized
  • Available on Windows, Mac and Android, iOS in development
  • "No vi be coding", classic development without AI according to the authors

⏳ What is coming soon

This is version 0.100b, very early in development. The special chips (SuperFX, DSP1, SA1...) are not yet implemented, which excludes for now Star Fox, Yoshi's Island and a few other notable titles. Netplay is also in progress. Bugs remain. But the basis is there, and the project is actively developed.
