µTari Go: a handheld Atari 2600 with a built-in CRT screen, no emulation

Maker Nick Bild built a handheld that plays real Atari 2600 cartridges on the original 6507 processor, with a 4-inch CRT screen.

Maker Nick Bild has just unveiled the µTari Go, a handheld Atari 2600 that runs real cartridges with no emulation at all. It relies on the original 6507 processor, with no FPGA, and on the µTari board the author had already designed to shrink the console.

The device packs a flat 4-inch CRT fed directly with composite video, seven buttons (a 3D-printed D-pad plus FIRE, SELECT and START), a PAM8302 audio amplifier with an 8-ohm speaker and a cartridge slot mounted inside the case. Power comes from a 12 V jack, so an external battery pack works.

An open project for the curious

The project's GitHub repository, under the MIT license, provides the parts list and the 3D case files. It does not include a step-by-step build guide, though: it targets makers already comfortable with electronics. You can browse the project repository to download the models and bill of materials, and its README is the starting point to understand the assembly.

The project is independent and not affiliated with Atari. Retro Dodo cites a Hackaday report dated October 7, 2026.
