Veins of Iron: a Wolfenstein 3D-style gothic FPS for the Super Nintendo launches on Kickstarter
Veins of Iron is a first-person shooter for the Super Nintendo in the spirit of Wolfenstein 3D, blending gothic horror with Resident Evil influences. It is developed by ModeVII, a homebrew studio for which this is the first commercial project, with Jan Olausson at the helm. The game is written from scratch in C and 65816 assembly, and its pixel art was made in Aseprite, without AI according to the developer. The story is set in a Europe choked with soot and superstition, where Viktor Eisenhart, a World War I survivor, investigates ritual murders committed by apostate monks.
It is designed to run on a real SNES thanks to a custom cartridge with a Raspberry Pi RP2350B coprocessor (dual ARM Cortex-M33 cores at 150 MHz, 8 MB of flash, 1 MB of SRAM). The developer claims 30 frames per second on real hardware, with textured floors and ceilings, lighting, screen shake and a scripted event system. The content: 20 levels, 5 weapons, 8 enemy types and 4 bosses.
A Kickstarter launched, and a row over AI-generated art
A Kickstarter campaign started around October 18 to 20, 2026, with a goal of €9,900; at the time of the source, €7,502 had been raised from 60 backers. Boxed NTSC and PAL physical editions are offered at €99. The campaign and box art were AI-generated, which the developer presents as a placeholder: facing criticism, they say they understand and are working with an artist on new hand-drawn art. The Kickstarter page and the official website detail the project.
