Homebrewer Leigh "Gravious" Ashton, helped by original artist Mark R. Jones, restores Ocean's 1987 classic on the Spectrum.

Wizball, Ocean's 1987 classic developed by Sensible Software, is back on the ZX Spectrum in a restored and rebalanced version. Homebrewer Leigh "Gravious" Ashton released Wizball: Enhanced Edition in mid-October 2026, with help from Mark R. Jones, the original graphics artist at Ocean, as reported by Time Extension.

This edition brings back to the Spectrum features of the Commodore 64 version that were missing: colour-cycling projectiles, Purple Blazor power shots, instruction pages, an enemies-remaining counter, missing fonts and a new high score table. The presentation is reworked too: less sprite flicker, an overhauled HUD, a dual parallax starfield, full-colour menus, an attract mode and a jukebox of all the game's music.

A deep rebalance

On the gameplay side, hit boxes have been redefined, scoring rules revised and collision detection made more consistent. The author states that no generative AI was used and that not everything from the C64 version made it in. The game only runs on a Spectrum 128K (or a matching emulator).

You can get it from the project's itch.io page, which also holds launch instructions for a real Spectrum or an emulator. Check the price and the files offered on the page before downloading.
