Xbox Turns Disc Games Into Digital Licences, Testing Began August 31
Microsoft officially unveiled a programme called Disc to Digital on August 26, 2026, with the rollout starting on August 31 for members of the Xbox Insider Program. The principle is straightforward: the player inserts a supported disc into an Xbox One or Xbox Series X, launches the game, and receives a permanent digital entitlement to that title. The announcement came from Jason Ronald, Xbox's vice president of next generation.
The entitlement is more than a simple backup copy. It unlocks Xbox Cloud Gaming and Xbox Play Anywhere for games that support those services, meaning the title can be launched on PC, on a disc-less console or via streaming, without digging the disc back out. Microsoft says thousands of titles are eligible from the start of the test and that most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc releases are covered, without publishing a full list.
The most discussed detail is what happens to the physical disc. Unlike older conversion schemes seen elsewhere in the industry, the disc is neither invalidated nor tied to an account: it keeps working exactly as before, so it can still be lent, resold or kept in a collection. Microsoft frames the initiative as part of its preservation policy, alongside backwards compatibility, arguing that a physical library stays playable even once optical drives disappear from consoles. No date has been given for general availability, nor for adding the remaining titles.
The official details are in the announcement published on Xbox Wire. Anyone wanting to try the feature right away has to join the Insider programme, whose sign-up and participation rules are explained in the official Xbox Insider Program FAQ.
