Announced at GDC 2026, the backward compatibility branch of Project Helix will allow you to play around 300 original Xbox and Xbox 360 games directly on Windows 11.

Microsoft made a notable announcement during GDC 2026: the backward compatibility component of Project Helix will bring the possibility of playing around 300 Xbox and Xbox 360 games directly under Windows 11. An initiative clearly linked to the 25th anniversary of the Xbox console, planned for later in 2026.

Jason Ronald, Xbox vice president of next generation, confirmed that the technology uses what Microsoft calls adaptive emulation, a system that dynamically adjusts emulation settings based on the needs of the game and the capabilities of the host machine.

Concretely, the system works on three layers:

  • A compatibility layer translating Xbox system calls to their Windows equivalents
  • A graphics wrapper converting DirectX console to DirectX 12 standard
  • A memory manager managing the architectural differences between console and PC

Integration with Xbox Game Pass is planned, which would allow subscribers to access these retro titles without additional purchase. Microsoft has, however, confirmed that this announcement will not be part of the Xbox Games Showcase in June, where priority will be given to upcoming games.

For Xbox retrogaming enthusiasts, this is potentially game-changing news: hundreds of games from the original Xbox and 360 era playable natively on a Windows 11 PC, without having to take your old console out of the closet.
