Ymir, a Promising New Sega Saturn Emulator, Emerges in June 2026

The Sega Saturn remains one of the most delicate consoles to emulate correctly. Its atypical architecture, composed of two SH-2 processors working in parallel and quadrilateral-based graphics rendering, has always posed considerable challenges to emulator developers.

In early June 2026, a new project named Ymir was made public. Still in active development, it demonstrates a serious approach to the Saturn architecture.

Why the Saturn is so complex

Its two Hitachi SH-2 CPUs, VDP1, VDP2 and SCU DSP audio processor formed a system whose real behavior remains difficult to capture in software. The reference emulator Mednafen is resource-intensive. Ymir is good news for preserving the Saturn catalog, which includes gems like Panzer Dragoon Saga and Guardian Heroes.
