A complete translation patch, covering both text and graphics, finally makes Nihon Falcom's cult RPG playable in English on PS2, a version that had stayed Japan-exclusive since 2005.

More than two decades after its Japanese release, the PlayStation 2 version of Ys III: Wanderers From Ys finally has a complete English translation patch. Patch v1.0, released on August 8, 2026, translates all of the game's text and graphics, complete with a new variable-width font for better readability.

A version that stayed in the shadows despite its qualities

The third entry in Nihon Falcom's cult series, Ys III originally launched in 1989 on Japanese home computers (PC-8801, PC-9801) before seeing multiple ports on the TurboGrafx-16, Super Nintendo and Mega Drive, all localized into English at the time. The PS2 version, released exclusively in Japan, offered a faithful remake of the original with updated graphics and voice acting, while keeping the series' trademark side-view combat system. Without an official localization, it remained out of reach for English-speaking players for over twenty years, with most fans instead discovering Ys III through its later remake, Ys: The Oath in Felghana.

The project was led by Kaisaan (programming and hacking), with Josep handling translation and Etokapa covering graphics and the opening video, the same team behind the earlier PS2 translation of Ys V: Lost Kefin, Kingdom of Sand. The patch, distributed as an .xdelta file to be applied to a BIN image of the game, is available for free on the project's GitHub releases page. Applying it requires the free tool DeltaPatcher, a graphical interface that makes the process straightforward even for players who have never patched a ROM before.
