Zaxxon Gets A Definitive Atari 2600 Version After 44 Years, With 99 Levels And Restored Isometric View

Champ Games is preparing a definitive Zaxxon for Atari 2600, due in October 2026, with 99 levels, the arcade's isometric perspective fully restored, and an ARM coprocessor inside, with a playable demo already available.

Forty-four years after Zaxxon's original Atari 2600 adaptation - infamously known for ditching the arcade's isometric perspective in favor of a third-person view - the team at Champ Games is preparing a version that finally does the original justice. Due in October 2026 as both a physical cartridge and a digital ROM, this new adaptation faithfully restores the isometric perspective of Sega's 1982 arcade cabinet, with a library of 99 levels drawn from Zaxxon, Super Zaxxon, and original creations.

The technical feat is made possible by the Melody Board, a coprocessor card embedded inside the cartridge that houses an ARM processor with 64 KB of RAM - far beyond the 2600's standard 8-32 KB. The game offers four difficulty modes (Novice, Standard, Advanced, Challenge) and supports the AtariVox/SaveKey peripheral as well as the Quadtari for multiplayer.

A long-overdue technical redemption for one of the arcade era's most iconic shooters.

The team behind the project is John Champeau, Nathan Strum, and Dave Dries, all veterans of the Atari homebrew scene. A playable demo is already available on the Champ Games website. To try it without real hardware, the recommended emulators are Stella (v7+ ideally) or Gopher2600. Source: Time Extension
