Zelda: Twilight Princess comes to PC, 'Courage Reborn' promises 60 FPS, 4K and mod support
DecompilingThe Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess GameCube version had been completed at the end of December 2025. Since then, an independent team has been working on what everyone was hoping for: a native PC port called Twilight Princess: Courage Reborn. And this week, a showcase video confirms that the project is moving very well.
🎮 What is it exactly?
Courage Reborn is not affiliated with the official ZeldaRET decompilation project, it is a separate team that has taken the decompiled code to build a complete native PC port. Like all similar projects (OoT, SM64, Jak & Daxter...), it does not distribute any Nintendo assets: you must provide your own legal copy of the GameCube game to supply the port with graphic and audio resources.
📹 What the showcase shows
The video, shared via Video Game Esoterica whose team provided a test build, shows the game's lengthy intro sequence in Link's village. The verdict: "completely crash-free" on this portion. The developers specify that the immediate goal is to achieve public open source code before moving to beta. style="user-select: auto;">What is already functional or in progress:
- 60 Native FPS, the original game is stuck at 30 FPS
- Compatibility with 4K textures modalready existing
- Mod Linklein development (play as the female version of Link, previewed by ZeldArtist)
- Support for mods generally, thanks to access to source code
🔧Why it's important
Twilight Princess is technically emulable via Dolphin, but a native port changes everything: better performance, free framerate, direct access to the code for modders, and a solid foundation for improvements not possible via emulation. This is exactly what the ports of Ocarina of Time (Ship of Harkinian) and Super Mario 64 brought to their respective communities.
The code is currently being developed in private via a Discord. Once in beta, it will be published on GitHub. The public release date is not yet set, but the progress visible in the showcase is encouraging.
⚠️ Nintendo watch
As with all projects of this type, the legal threat from Nintendo looms. The community is hoping that the port will be released before Kyoto's lawyers notice, a scenario already experienced with other Nintendo decompilation projects.
