Zero Wing Is Joining The Neo Geo AES+ Lineup, Thanks To h0ffman's Homebrew Port

Zero Wing, Toaplan's cult shoot 'em up that hit arcades in 1989 and later became infamous for its clumsy English translation on Mega Drive ("All your base are belong to us"), never got an official Neo Geo release. That's about to change: photos taken at Plaion's Neo Geo AES+ booth at Tokyo Game Show 2026 revealed a box for the game sitting alongside the console's upcoming official releases.

The port didn't start from scratch. It's built on the unofficial conversion that homebrew developer h0ffman has been working on for years, the same coder behind previous Neo Geo ports of Shinobi and Golden Axe. Spotted in show-floor photos by the account @Project_COE, the project was quickly confirmed by Plaion Japan, and h0ffman himself reacted on Bluesky with a simple "Might as well make it official."

A technically polished port

h0ffman's hack is far from a rough hack job: it reproduces the six parallax layers and two sprite layers of the original arcade release, with every level completed. Neo Geo CD support is still in development. This Neo Geo AES+ version will ship as a physical cartridge, though it won't be part of the console's initial wave of releases.

The story is another example of how a fan preservation project or technical curiosity can, with the rights holder's blessing, turn into an official commercial release decades after a game's original run.
