After Three Decades, Cult Shoot 'Em Up Zero Wing Is Finally Getting an Official Neo Geo Release

The unofficial homebrew Neo Geo port of Zero Wing, built by developer h0ffman, is becoming an officially licensed Plaion cartridge for the Neo Geo AES+.

Zero Wing, Toaplan's cult 1989 shoot 'em up (infamous in the West for its botched English translation, "All your base are belong to us"), never made it to Neo Geo: only arcade, Mega Drive and PC Engine CD² versions existed until now. That's about to change. At Tokyo Game Show 2026, publisher Plaion unveiled an official Neo Geo port of the game, developed in collaboration with SNK.

This port is actually built on the work of homebrew developer h0ffman, already known for unofficial Neo Geo conversions of Shinobi and Golden Axe. His "nearly complete" Zero Wing build already featured six layers of parallax backgrounds and two sprite layers to faithfully recreate the arcade's sense of depth, despite the Neo Geo hardware's well-known display limitations. Plaion approached h0ffman to turn this unofficial project into a licensed release, an outcome the developer himself welcomed on Bluesky: "Might as well make it official."

A Neo Geo AES+ cartridge expected in September 2027

The cartridge bundles both the US and Japanese versions of the game, with automatic region selection based on the console's BIOS. Its release, originally planned for November 2026, has been pushed back to September 16, 2027 due to component supply constraints affecting the entire Neo Geo AES+ lineup. h0ffman has also contributed to other AES+ titles, including restoring the Scotland course, originally exclusive to the Neo Geo CD version, in Big Tournament Golf.
